HATCHET

MARION COLLEGE

J (alien fyinqinia

c jotewotd

“M oods” lias been chosen the theme of t lie 19.5!) Hatchet because
in the everyday life of the Marion College Family, much depends on how-
each member of this family enters into the “Spirit ” or mood of the moment.

Faculty-student relationships are firmly based on foundations
of mutual respect, friendliness, two-fold learning. Invaluable experience,
insight to many besetting problems and inspiration are the faculty’s
gifts to the student body in exchange for the dedication, application,
and cooperation of the family’s younger members.

Student-student relationships are warm, intimate, satisfying.
Each, in giving of herself to the utmost, soon discovers she is maturing
emotionally. And what memorious times she has in doing this— times
sweetened by joyous shouts of laughter and flavored by the salt of tears
but memorious never-the-less.

On the following pages we have tried to capture some of the spirit
and feelings that are a part of each day, each deed, word, and thought.

yes and sincere, sunny smile invite our confidence
and friendship. Your keen, vital mind inspires us to aspire to its height
and its width. Your vivacious, delightful personality makes you young
at heart.

Your intense interest in people and in the world about you salt and
peppers your outlook on life, giving it just the right amount of spice and
flavor.

In the classroom, you encourage and stimulate what is the best in
each of us. You do not give lip service to your ideals, you are their living
proof. You are a student as well as a teacher; a student of life doing
graduate work.

W i th a profound respect and a deep admiration, we dedicate the
1 1 atciie'i of 19.59 to you, Miss Mary Preston Sheffey.

• FROM

• OUR

• PRESIDENT . . .

This school year has witnessed a spirit of cooperation on
the part of faculty, staff and students which will increase our
joy and satisfaction as we, in retrospect, evaluate the year.
As President of the College, may 1 use this means of expressing
my personal gratitude to all who have worked so selflessly
toward the attainment of this enviable goal.

Marietta IIeidbreder . Business Manager

By the look on the faces of each of these members of the Hatchet Staff, the business of
creating a yearbook is both exciting and rewarding.

Excitement and anticipation of creation tingled in the air at the first meeting in the fall.
Eight months of preparation have not dulled the first excitement or anticipation. These eight months
of preparation have channeled our exuberant energy into the striving and the final attainment of our
goal to present to its faculty and students the moods of Marion College.

Halls of Marion

We love the halls of Marion,

Where our college days began.

And with glad hearts remember,

All the days spent within.

We thank you for the fun we've had,
The  friends  we  hold  so  dear;

And all the values we have gained,
We’ll cherish through the years.

And now, though we must leave you,
Our thoughts will linger here
We hope you’ll not forget us.

When we graduate this year.

STUDENT COUNCIL

‘AY e wish to promote a better understanding of each of us for our fellow students
and we endeavor to unite the student body," says Harriet Goode, capable and hard-working
president of the Student Council, speaking for the members of her organization.

The Student Council plays a leading role on the Marion College stage, preserving
student honor, maintaining t lie high standards of the college, and encouraging responsible
and loyal contributions to the student body.

HONOR COURT

“Honor in its truest sense, and as it relates to life at Marion College, involves all
that Christ taught concerning duty to self and to one another in thought, word, and act.”

One of the most time-honored and cherished traditions of M arion College is the
honor system and the embodiment of its authority in the Honor Court, a body of three
members representing the senior, junior, and high school classes.

However, honor is not antiquated and moss-covered; it is a vibrating challenge to
aspire to the highest ideals of Christianity in everyday living.

The faces which form the triangle, the official symbol of the Young Women’s Chris¬
tian Association, are a vivacious, creative group known as the “Y” cabinet.

The three sides of the triangle emphasize the three-fold spiritual program of the “ V ",
candle-light meditations, recognition and installation services, and grace at meals.

Give this group a rectangle to work with and the result will be a blue and silver

MISSIONARY SOCIETY

Our Missionary Society is vitally interested in promoting Christian College life. At
informal monthly meetings and special chapel services, the members become intimately
acquainted with the hopes, the joys, and the problems of Africans, Europeans, Asians, and
Americans who are northern and southern neighbors.

The Missionary Society extends its generous helping hand to those in need in the far-

THE HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR

Mr. Pe terson's proteges made their debut of 1958-59 at the Community Christmas
Concert. After this initial performance, the result of months of practice, they have encored
several times, both at the college and in the community. Most recently they have donned
their robes to participate in the Wednesday evening Lenten services at Ebenezer Lutheran

The formal initiation ceremony lias just been completed and those young ladies
seated on the couch are now members in good standing of the Delta Beta Chapter of the
l*hi Theta Kappa. They have a right to smile for they have captured the top academic
prize at Marion.

To be eligible for membership, a student must carry a minimum of fifteen hours with
twelve of these in the arts and sciences, and must rank scholastically in the upper ten per¬

A vital and keen interest in the world of today and what's making it “tick” is I lie
only requirement for membership in the International Relations Club. In trying to pro¬
mote a better understanding of our neighbors around the world, an annual party is given
in which the honors are equally showed by the eighty-odd countries of the 1 nited Nations.

In the pictures above and below, the members are in the midst of a give-and-take

Those gals know la dernier mot in making up fashions! They are the official “Avon

il would seem these "Home Ee-ers” are super salesmen.

Emphasis on makeup and beauty care is one of the ways in which the Home Eco¬

The addition of this organization to M avion College social life is a response to the
urgent appeal for new and better trained teachers. S. I*. T. has taken the highly responsible
task of interesting and informing onr students about the teaching profession on its young
shoulders.

Mr. J. Leonard Manck, superintendent of Smyth County schools, addressed the
group's first meeting; panel discussions, special topics and filmstrips have follow-ups to
promote interest in the art of teaching.

HIGH SCHOOL SONG

When a high school girl goes walkin’
with her one and only man,

Rest assured she’ll do

the most official thing she can.

She won’t let him hold her hand

’cause he might not understand,

That a high school girl’s an angel in disguise. Ah, Ha !

REFRAIN :

Oh, the high school girls are the truest and the best,

and they keep things goin’ and they never take a rest.

They have one yell and they yell it all together,
and it goes like this, Marion High forever.

When 9:30 rolls around all the teachers wear a frown,

’cause they know the high school’s up and runnin’ round.

We'll remember all the fun that was had by everyone,

’( ’ause a high school girl s an angel in disguise. Ah, Ha!

1 ndcr the able direction of Miss Leah Bonham, hockey ranked as a major sport of
the year. Neither rain nor sleet stopped the team from practicing each afternoon, learning
new skills and improving old ones.

As hockey season drew to a close we had embedded in our minds two important
lessons, NEVER “piddle in the striking circle” and it isn't the score that counts but the
way you play the game.

The inspiration of our coach as well as the sportsmanship and ambition ot the team
accounted for a successful season.

A circle is a continuous line, take away one part and it is crippled, yet that one part
is no more important than any of the other parts. The circle is only meaningful it all the
parts are connected and in their proper perspective.

Basketball is an exciting game of skilled coordination, both of the muscles and the
team members. Each of the girls in this circle has some definite skills and a definite per¬
sonality. But we have learned to merge these skills and these personalities into a well-
co-ordinated, well-functioning unit, the team. This was not accomplished in a few hours
or practice periods, but after weeks and months of serious concentration and effort. To
merge fourteen individuals into a well-organized team is, without a doubt, the most difficult
task of the coach, the manager, the captains, and the team itself.

THE MARION IDEAL

... is to care for what is rather than for what seems; to he loyal to what is best
in the tradition of the past and yet open to the discoveries of the present and the
hopes of the future; to find freedom in the knowledge of the truth, beauty in the

School Editors Demand Confidence

Editors of high school and college yearbooks insist upon doing business with a printer in
whose integrity they can have confidence.

From the very beginning, in 1883, Stone Printing has been a quality leader in the special¬
ized field of yearbook production. \\ e are proud of the confidence demonstrated by the acceptance
which “Yearbooks by Stone” have received among our many customers over a span of more than
three-quarters of a century.

There are countless reasons why so many schools have complete confidence in Stone. \ou,
too, can take advantage of our complete service to high school and college staffs. From the first
layout to the completed job, printed by either offset or letterpress, your book will be produced
to meet your most exacting requirements and your budget.

One of our representatives will be happy to meet with your staff and discuss your next
yearbook. Please call on us.
